Captain and Match Secretaries report.

HURST Achieve Amazing Double Promotion!

Wow what an amazing season. The Hurst Newbury team are champions of Division 2, and promoted to Division 1 of the Newbury League.

This is a massive achievement for the club and all players involved. Hurst is back in the top flight at last.

We strongly encourage any players with an interest of playing good standard badminton to come along to our club night and see what we are all about. The teams are not set in stone and the right players could get a regular place in our teams.

The Basingstoke Division 3 team finished runners up and will play in Division 2 next season also.

Newbury:

We finished in 1st place and very nearly went the whole season undefeated – we sadly lost 5-4 away to Bucklebury. Total played 12 won 11 with 79 for and 29 against. Solid performances from all players all year round, including reserve of the season Tony Good staring as the Super sub against Cannons, picking up a point with Rob Badcock and securing the win. Mark Payne and Alex Wigmore combined effectively to not lose a game with the other two pairs always doing what was needed to get us the win. A massive thanks needs to go to all who played it was a great performance. Highlights were without a doubt beating Firefly home and away, and the 5-4 away victory to Newbury A with only 2 pairs.

Basingstoke:

The Basingstoke team had a fantastic season just sneaking through in 2nd place and gaining promotion to Division 2 next season. Solid performances were achieved by every player. We only struggled against Aldermaston who convincingly won the division undefeated. We dished out a total of five 9-0 white washes in the season and finished with 79 points for and 29 against. The stars of the season were Keith Lawrence and Chris Puxley who never lost a game when partnered together. The most memorable night was beating Beechdown 6-3 at home a great all round performance with all pairs picking up 2 against a very strong Beechdown team.

Captains Report W/E 20/04/07
Hurst Newbury team promoted after ending Kennet B’s unbeaten run.

After 2 close defeats in as many weeks to St Mary’s B (3-6Home) & (5-4Away) the Newbury team were left with it all to do to ensure promotion.
Firstly
The team put these losses behind them and rebuilt confidence by hammering Newbury C 9-0 in a truly professional performance on Friday 13th April.
Then
The final game of the season the following Monday (16th April) was an “easy” fixture. The team was faced with the simple situation of: Beat the undefeated runaway train of Kennet B and be promoted, lose and almost certainly face another season in the same division.
We had it all to do!

The team’s response was to pull of an emphatic victory and end Kennet B’s run of 13 straight victories with a very convincing 7-2 victory over the division 3 champions, on what will be a memorable night for both teams.
The Hurst’s pairing’s of Barry Egginton - Ray Monger and Mark Payne – Alex Wigmore, took all three of their games not dropping an end. Rob Badcock & Chris Puxley toughly fought away to take the other point in the 7-2 victory.

The Team now looks forward with confidence to Next Season in Division 2.

Club and Team News WC 05/02/07

Newbury Team report.

Captain’s report.
The Hurst Newbury Team are going great guns in the Newbury league this season. The team has been dishing out thrashings left right and centre both home and away. The only minor setback coming at home to Kennet B (3-6) when the two key youngsters in Colin Cresswell and Mark Payne, were taken ill and caught up in festivities. The team however still feels very strongly that they by keeping up the consistent victories they will be in with a good chance to take the title when they take on Kennet B in the final game of the 2006/07 season.
The captain would like to say a big thank you to number one pair, Rob Badcock and Chris Puxley, who’s form has been leaving opposition devastated. Their most recent victims being Aldermaston, only dropping 17 points in 6 legs secured the 6-3 victory away from home on what was a very tough night for the club as both of Hurst’s teams had matches that night.
